Melkite Diaconal Program

General Information

Deacons are part of a permanent order in the Church and important for the life of the Church.  This major order is not to be considered simply a “stepping-stone” to the priesthood.  Deacons form a visible sign of the working of the Holy Spirit through their life of service in the Church.  The diaconate is largely a parish-based ministry, but always with the challenge to broaden its service.  Deacons allow for the liturgical services to be conducted in their fullest form.  They provide additional ministry such as visiting the sick, elderly, and bereaved, maintaining the parish’s finances and property, and assisting in sacramental preparation.  The diaconate is an ecclesial ministry of service that can deepen a man’s own spiritual life and give him a more powerful sense of purpose and place in life.

The Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy of Newton conducts a diaconal formation program to prepare men for service, usually structured as a multi-year, in-depth program focusing on Byzantine theology, liturgy, and pastoral care. It is a rigorous process involving academic study, spiritual formation, and mentorship by pastors, often under the guidance of a Director of Deacon Formation.

Key aspects of the Melkite Diaconal Program include:

  • Structure and Duration: The program often involves several years of formation, combining theological studies with practical ministry training.
  • Application Process: The Eparchy of Newton periodically accepts new applicants, requiring a formal application process to begin the, often, five-year journey of discernment and training.
  • Curriculum Focus: Training covers essential areas of the Melkite (Byzantine) tradition, including:
    • Liturgical Worship: Detailed study of the Divine Liturgy, the daily cycle of prayers, and the role of the deacon.
    • Theology and Scripture: Introduction to Eastern moral thought, Patristics, and a Byzantine perspective on the New Testament.
    • Pastoral Ministry: Practical training in visiting the sick, teaching, and assisting with parish administration.
  • Target Audience: The program is open to men, including those who are married, seeking to serve the church as permanent deacons.
  • Leadership: The program is overseen by the Eparchy of Newton’s vocation team, with specific leadership for deacon formation by Fr. David Baroody.
