PASTORAL LEADERSHIP I -While future priests tend to envision their pastoral ministry as preaching and teaching, celebrating the Liturgy and hours of spiritual devotional time, they will also be called upon to lead people; manage church resources; manage church finances; develop budgets; engage in planning; manage church property; etc. It is imperative that students about to embark upon a life of pastoral ministry possess knowledge about and demonstrate skill in leadership and administrative management. This course will provide students with the necessary knowledge and pastoral leadership skills to effectively discharge their administrative duties in pastoral ministry in order to become successful leaders. FOUNDATIONS OF SPIRITUALITY I – This course surveys the foundational themes of the spiritual life in the Byzantine Tradition. Wednesday 10:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. (2 credits or audit)
INTRODUCTION TO CHURCH HISTORY– This course constitutes a survey of the history of the Church from the time of Christ through Constantinople IV (869-870) and V (879-880). Thursday 7:00 p.m. – 8:50 p.m. (2 credits or audit)
INTRODUCTION TO DOGMATICS – This introductory course will examine the foundations of Christian dogma. Wednesday 9:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. (3 credits or audit)
INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC – In this course the students will study the basic symbols of music. Students will be given the tools to be able to sing, write and perform single-line musical notation. Monday 1:30 p.m. – 3:20 p.m. (2 credits or audit)
INTRODUCTION TO LITURGY AND THE SACRAMENTAL MYSTERIES – This course presents a historical, theological, and methodological introduction to the study of Byzantine liturgical prayer and worship in general. Tuesday 9:00 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. (3 credits or audit)
INTRODUCTION TO MORAL THEOLOGY – This course introduces the tradition of moral theology of the Byzantine East into the greater context of the Western ethical tradition. Monday 2:30 p.m. – 5:20 p.m. (3 credits or audit)
SOURCES FROM ANTIQUITY I – This course introduces the philosophies that shaped Western and Byzantine civilization and how their thought was taken up by the Church Fathers to be developed in dialogue with Judaeo-Christian doctrine. Monday 7:00 p.m. – 8:50 p.m. (2 credits or audit)
