Sages Standing in God’s Holy Fire (Abouna Justin Rose)
The word, Byzantium, invokes images of oriental splendor and palace intrigue, ornate silks and mass bindings, processions, walls, horse races, the mystique of Hagia Sophia, the imperial throne or Greek Fire. Shrouded in mystery as if in wafts of incense, Byzantium has been both admired and reviled… often at the same time. In their day, simply calling themselves “Romans” and poised between Europe and Asia, the Byzantines of Constantinople were divided from within by heresies or competing philosophies and besieged from without by barbarians, Latins, or Turks, sometimes on two fronts at once. This course will examine the history of Byzantium from the perspective of Church History relying on both primary and secondary sources to explore this rich and important world.
