Very Reverend Archpriest John G. Petro (1942-2022)

Eternal Memory. Blessed Repose.
Very Reverend Archpriest John G. Petro 1942-2022
Ordained priest 1968
Rector of the Byzantine Catholic Seminary 1995-2012

The recent falling asleep in the Lord of this Seminary’s longest-serving rector, the Very Reverend Archpriest John G. Petro, became an opportunity for us to reflect not so much on death, but rather on the life and hope that are central to our Christian faith. Eternal life is a gift of our Lord Jesus Christ granted to those who hear God’s Word and keep it. Fr. John broke open this Word vividly, compassionately, and convincingly throughout his 54-year ministry to God’s people.

Recognizing the directives of the Catholic Church on priestly formation, Fr. John as the rector of B.C.S., together with this Seminary’s Board, staff, and faculty, set out to obtain full academic accreditation and degree-granting authorization which we’ve been able to maintain ever since. His leadership also brought B.C.S. in alignment with the directives of the United States bishops regarding Catholic seminaries. The Seminary matured into a theological center for lifelong learning with outreach through both on-campus and online modalities under his rectorship.

As we ask that God continue to bless you and your loved-ones and all of Father John’s family with health and peace, we pray that God grant eternal memory and blessed repose to his departed servant, the Archpriest John.
